Statement on Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme

The Commons Public Accounts Committee has said that “encouraging” progress has been made on the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement programme but highlighted the need to create a holistic intervention for those who have survived torture.

World Jewish Relief is supporting Syrian refugees who have come to the UK as part of the government’s resettlement programme to integrate by improving their English and helping them strengthen their employability and find work. The international aid agency’s work is indicative of the importance of providing a range of services for refugees to best enable them to integrate into British society.

Paul Anticoni, Chief Executive of World Jewish Relief, said:

“People who come to the UK on the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme have been through unimaginable trauma and challenge. We must do all we can to ensure that they are able to cope with the trauma they have been through and ultimately find sanctuary, assistance, friendship and a future in Britain.

“It’s incontrovertible that language training and employment support are crucial factors in refugees settling in a new country. Our employment programme with Horton Housing Association in Bradford, praised by the British Government, offers Syrian refugees the opportunity to gain vital workplace skills, an appreciation of British work culture and ultimately a route into employment.”
